Copywriters are (kinda )fu*ked. Here’s what they should do instead…

It’s a fact:

Copywriting has become an endangered career path.

BUT…

Not because it’s not in demand anymore.

And certainly not because “AI is replacing us”

Here’s the bigger problem: The value of copywriting itself is not longer what it used to be.

Let’s start with AI.

Yes, you’re right… it’s NOT nearly as good a real human copywriter, but the problem is that the executives, CEOs, and marketing managers don’t really give a shit.

When they see AI, they see an opportunity to save tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars a year they pay you in exchange for a $97/month AI copywriting tool.

They will, of course, suffer the consequences of this fucking dumb decision down the road, but again… they’re totally blind to it because they’re not marketers. They numbers people.

Then there’s the sea of people calling themselves ‘copywriters’ who are flooding the internet from LinkedIn all the way to Upwork… Which is further devaluing copywriting.

This is just basic economics at this point.

You know why heart or brain surgeons make multiple 6-figures a year?

It’s a tough fucking job.

You know why Rolexes are perceived so valuable?

Because there’s a limited supply and it’s actually kinda hard to buy. You can’t just walk in a store and get one like a pack of smokes.

So what happens when there’s millions of copywriters out there, all promising the same thing?

The value of a copywriter plummets.

Becoming a copywriter, as you might know, is simply a matter of decision.

You don’t need a degree… Or a qualification… Or even a certification.

You just need to shout into the world “I’M A COPYWRITER” and that’s it.

Do you see it?

Look, I’m not trying to be a doomer. I HATE those people.

But I’m just trying to get you to see the current reality of this career: It’s a total disaster, and it’s not likely to change any time soon.

So, what should you do if you’re a copywriter?

Alright… are you sitting down?

You sure?

*Drum rolls*

Build your own email list.

There’s no two ways about it.

If you not only want to survive but actually generate REALLY good income, then you have to pivot to email marketing and list building.

Hear me out…

A few years ago, when I still chasing down clients in the DMs & cold emails, I came across an OG email marketer, Chris Orzechowski.

Chris’s philosophy is simple AF:

#1) Build your own email list

#2) Send daily emails selling your products

#3) Get paid

IT’S GENIUS!!! LOL.

From that day, I started learning more about email lists.

And I quickly realized one thing…

Email marketing is pretty damn boring.

You have to configure DNS records like SPF, DKIM, & DMARC…

You have to figure out deliverability…

You have to learn how to use an ESP & set up automations…

But as it turned out, the payoff would beINSANE.

in 3 months, I was pretty good at email marketing (though far from an expert).

I put together a little squeeze page on LeadPages and tested a couple different lead magnets.

One really took off. People seemed to love it.

I gave away my top 5 subject line formulas that consistently got the highest open rates.

You can check it out here: https://www.theemailmethod.com/subject-lines2/

I created a simple, $47 email storytelling playbook.

This is an ebook where I outline my entire process for generating 6 & 7 figures with my email copy frameworks.

I started selling it in my daily emails to my list.

I slowly started getting sales.

A sale here, two sales there.

But then, something strange happened…

I started gaining traction.

An ocassional sale turned into consistent, DAILY sales.

The more emails I’d send, the more money I’d earn.

Wanna know what happened 8 months later, on Christmas day?

I turned my email list into my full time income.

I starting expanding.

I added more expensive courses. I started doing 1-on-1 coaching.

Giving people feedback on their emails.

My email subscribers loved it.

…And still do, to this day.

What does today look like?

Pretty fucking beautiful, if you ask me.

I wake up every day early in the morning.

I think of an email story to send to my list. Then I choose what product to sell.

Then I click send.

The sales rake in.

Looking back, the only thing I regret is not building my list sooner.

So if you’re a copywriter and you’re reading this, and you’re getting that horryfing feeling in your gut that maybe your skills are no longer needed, you’re wrong.

You just have to pivot and serve yourself instead of clients.

Build that email list.

Build your own products.

Take the time to learn ads.

In 3–6 months, you’ll be much happier (and wealthier) than you are now. I promise you.
