What Up Muthafucka?!

Most people wouldn’t think you could talk to an 8-figure client like a buddy you’ve known since high school…

…and they’d be wrong.

(Conversation attached is this morning with a big shot lawyer.)

But it wasn’t always gifs and goofing off…

There was a time in my agency where 80–90% of my biz came from just one client.

We were crushing it…

…100+ clients together!

But in the back of my mind, I was terrified that if he took his bags and left…

…I’d be fucked and back to almost zero.

With a staff of 30+, whose salary I was responsible for.

I actually hated this particular client.

He designed websites for plastic surgeons and sold my SEO services as a mark up. It was your basic white label deal.

He was a mean drunk who liked blabbing for hours on pointless phone calls.

He was an angry dick… to put it mildly.

If he wanted a phone call, I called.

If he wrote an email, I rushed to respond.

When he jumped, I said “how high”.

We were in the dreaded “client-underling” relationship.

Being an underling sucked. It was like he was a shitty boss.

He paid me for SEO.

I delivered SEO….

…plus…

…hours of weekly marriage counseling, 24–7 email and phone support, listening to hours of complaining, shit tons of pointless meetings, and always being told my rankings weren’t good enough or fast enough.

(“I’ve paid you for 2 weeks. Why am I not #1 in NYC yet?”

“Ughhh, it’s competitive and the competition had a 10-year head start.”)

But the worst part was me.

Because I held on too long.

I was too afraid to “be real” with him…

…because I didn’t want to lose the only big client I had.

Life’s too short to put up with one giant angry dick.

FYI: Eventually I got my shit together and replaced the angry dick with a few happy whales.
