It shouldn’t be easy to build a product – or else everyone would do it

Been thinking about side hustle culture that have been promoted heavily online for years. This idea that anyone can build a product and make passive income from it is ludicrous. This is the 3 things I have to say about it.

1. Creating a product demands for a certain mindset

It’s easy to get a product wrong. Most of the time people make it too complicated or it doesn’t solve anybody’s problems. Just stuffing “stuff” into a product doesn’t not make it valuable or good.

2. Building a product requires a good process

In systems developed you have a basic process you work with. You manage your product like a project with clear goals and limitations. This is something some people dedicated their entire careers to. So to think that anyone can do it successfully is a fantasy that sells well.

3. Building a product isn’t enough, you also have to be able to sell it

In the fantasy of passive income you don’t just create a product, you also sell it. Sales might not be as difficult but it still has its challenges that isn’t for everyone.

It’s not impossible if you take it seriously

Even if you are able to build a product and then sell it successfully, there is still a problem with “passive income”.

All products requires some level of management, otherwise the product will reach the end of its life and you will not be prepared for it at all. That means you are back to square one.

So give up the idea of passive income and accept that you need to build a business around your product. By accepting the responsibility, your product have a greater chance of long term success.
