Good Ol’ Passion. Yeah, It Doesn’t Matter As A Blogger.

“Blog about what you love.”

“Write about the things you’re genuinely interested in.”

How many times have you heard those statements?

It’s like one of those ancient mantras that keeps getting passed down from one content creator to another. Some kind of sacred decree.

Is that really all it takes? Does passion even matter nowadays?

Before I go on any kind of ramble, I’m going to acknowledge the importance of passion and why it seemingly rolls of the tongue so easily.

Passion is a spark. It ignites the desire to share your story. It’s that electric pulse that animates the very essence of blogging.

And according to most people, without it blogging would be pointless. You’d just be a soulless individual ticking boxes in your content creation checklist.

Sounds juicy doesn’t it?

Well, I’m here to tell you passion alone is a shaky foundation on which to build a successful blog.

Let me tell you why.

1. Passion ≠ Expertise

Passion is a feeling, a powerful one at that, but you and I both know it doesn’t inherently come with knowledge or expertise.

You could be passionate about any niche but if you don’t have a deep understanding of the topic your content will lack substance.

I know most people will disagree with this but I think it’s expertise that adds value to passion. Not the other way around.

If you enjoy something and continue to learn about it then you become an expert. Same goes for anything you choose to write about.

2. Your Interests Evolve

Nobody’s passions are set in stone.

They evolve, they shift, and you know what? Sometimes they just completely wane.

What do you think happens when that initial fire dims?

You guessed it. You jump right into something else.

That’s why so many aspiring bloggers are easily preyed on and why we keep falling for the next shiny object.

Relying on passion alone means your blog’s future is tied to the consistency of your enthusiasm.

But as we both know, interests change. Any successful blog needs to adapt and evolve, not just ride the wave of a singular passion.

3. It Doesn’t Equate to Writing Skills

Love for a topic doesn’t always translate into the ability to write about it effectively.

Writing is a craft. It needs skills that often need to be learned and honed over time.

I know, I know. We’ve got A.I nowadays.

But you know what? I’m moving on to the next point.

4. The Business Aspect

There’s a huge difference between a hobby and a business.

If you’re blogging with a goal beyond personal expression passion alone isn’t enough.

Many of us fail not because we aren’t passionate enough but because we fail to treat our blogs as a business from day one.

The business side of blogging demands so many different skills.

Passion may fuel your drive, but it’s the business acumen that’ll help you make all those thousands you’ve been dreaming of.

5. Burnout

Ironically enough, passion can lead to burnout.

This is exactly what happens to me all the time. Especially around this time of the year (I’m writing this on Dec. 21st).

I do some research, find something that every YouTuber calls “the next best thing”, get extremely passionate about it, overcommit, then pour all my energy into it without sustainable boundaries.

The feeling that it just needs to be done at the expense of everything else.

That intense dedication especially when it takes a while to get any traction often leads to exhaustion. Both mentally and physically.

All of a sudden that thing you were once passionate about becomes a burden.

And do you know what happens when it becomes a burden?

This…

6. Do You Have An Audience?

Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean there’s an audience for it.

You need to take the time to figure out if there’s a demand for what you have to offer.

Your idea is only great if it aligns with a receptive audience.

Which means you’ll need to understand and adapt to your audience’s ever-changing needs.

That’s something that passion alone can’t always resolve.

So Where Do We Go From Here?

Now that I’ve bashed the whole idea of relying on passion alone does that mean you need to ignore it as a guiding force for your blog?

Absolutely not.

But you need to approach it with a more holistic view.

Passion is an essential ingredient, but it definitely isn’t the only one.

I’ve been reading this book — The Ikigai Journey: A Practical Guide to Finding Happiness and Purpose the Japanese Way.

In it the authors talk about the concept of “ikigai,” a Japanese term that roughly translates to “reason for being.”

It explores the idea that everyone has an ikigai, some unique purpose that gives your life meaning and happiness.

According to them, you find your ikigai at the intersection of 4 different elements:

  1. What you love (your passion).
  2. What the world needs (your mission).
  3. What you’re good at (your vocation).
  4. What you can be paid for (your profession).

For some reason we tend to ignore the last three in one way or another.

You need to build on your passion. Complement your enthusiasm with research. Continue to learn and build your skills. Take the time to understand the mechanics of blogging.

Let your blog evolve with your changing interests and the shifting landscape of your niche.

It’s all about finding balance — whatever that looks like for you.

A balanced approach will increase the likelihood of your blog not only being a source of personal fulfillment but also your chances of being successful.

So by all means start with passion but don’t let it end there.

Build upon it and watch as your blog transforms into something not just passionate, but powerful and sustainable.
