How Copywriting Can Improve Your Technical Writing Skills
By learning to write clearly, understand your audience, have a clear purpose, and use persuasive language, you can make your technical writing more effective and easy to understand.
As a novice technical writer on LinkedIn, my day to day job is to take complex software engineering information and present it in a way that is easy to understand. But, when I first started out last year, I struggled to make my writing clear and concise. That’s when I discovered the power of copywriting.
Copywriting is designed to persuade or influence the reader and its often used in marketing and advertising, but the skills it teaches are valuable for all types of writing. By learning copywriting techniques, I was able to sharpen my technical writing skills in a number of ways.
One of the most important lessons I learned from copywriting was the importance of clarity. In copywriting, every word counts — you have to be able to grab the reader’s attention and communicate your message in the shortest possible time. This is also true for technical writing. When you’re writing about a complex topic, Classes for example, it’s easy to get bogged down in jargon and technical details. But, by keeping my writing clear and concise, I am able to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
Another valuable lesson I am learning from copywriting is the importance of understanding my audience. In copywriting, it’s essential to know who you’re talking to and what they want to hear. The same is true for technical writing. By understanding my audience and their needs, I am able to tailor my writing to their level of understanding and make it more effective.
Copywriting has also taught me the importance of having a clear, specific purpose for my writing. In copywriting, every word must serve a purpose and contribute to the overall message. This is also true for technical writing.
Finally, copywriting has taught me the power of persuasive language. In copywriting, I have to be able to convince the reader to take a certain action. This is also true for technical writing. By using persuasive language, I can influence my readers.
In conclusion, I’ve learn that copywriting is an excellent tool for improving technical writing. By learning to write clearly, understand your audience, have a clear purpose, and use persuasive language, you can make your technical writing more effective and easy to understand. I highly recommend that any technical writer takes the time to learn the principles of copywriting.
