There’s a lot that can cause that lack of traffic, such as a weak headline or lead photo, but using the wrong tags, or not adding any tags, might have the greatest impact of all.

A tag is a keyword that you add to the settings when publishing your article that helps search engines and readers know what your story is about.

For example, when you post a story on Medium, you can choose up to five keywords, or tags, to add to your story settings before sending it out into the world.

The better your tags, the more likely you are to attract readers to your article. The important thing is to choose tags that actually relate to your story! For readers, it is very frustrating to click on an article thinking it’s about a certain topic, only to find out they’ve been duped.
