Where Are The Clients?
There is no profit without a client. Being a virtual assistant seems easy to become. But where are the clients? How can there be a virtual assistant business with no clients?
When I first started my virtual assistant journey back in 2016. My first client was given to me by the lady who hired me for the job. I actually met her in a FB group. I worked with the client helping her set up her webinar for her business. After five months I moved on to do other things.
It’s 2023. Where do you find clients to assist? You know what service you want to offer. You know the skills you have that you can use. Now all you need is someone to hire you so you can actually do the job you want to be paid to do.
Clients are everywhere. Both offline and online. On social media and some don’t use social media at all. The question should not be where are the clients. The question should be “How do I stand out and get noticed by the clients?”
You have Instagram, FB, Tik Tok, Twitter and Youtube. Each social media platform offers a different algorithm and comes with a set of community guidelines you have to follow in order to use their service. But can you say that you really want to use these platforms? Do you know if you should use one or more than one? Should you do just regular image post, video posts or a mix of both? It’s something to think about.
Not every client is online. Some are offline. At work, at the coffee shop, shopping, eating out, doing regular day to day things like you. Have you thought about making brochures to leave at your local library? Or at the laundromat, restaurant bulletin board, etc. What about media mail through the postal service? USPS offers media mail advertising. You can create postcards for your business and send it through the mail. There is a cost involved but you can look into it. You can find many videos on YouTube about how to advertise using media mail through the post office.
How can you stand out to your client to let them know you are looking for work? There are a million and one ways to do this. Heck, you can even Google search “How to stand out and find a client as a virtual assistant?” and a bunch of pages will come up giving you all the tea on how to do it.
But the question is do you want to be found by everyone? Or a certain kind of client? Have you even given thought to what kind of client you want to work with? It may be time to think about it a little and figure it out first.
Not everyone is going to be a client who will work well with you. Working with a client is like looking for a person to be in a relationship with. You want the relationship to be worth your time and emotional investment.
When it comes to things like communication, attitude, time management. Have you thought about your standards on these? What will you do when a client doesn’t honor your time and chooses to keep reaching out to you outside of your business hours? What will you do when a client wants you to take on a last minute tasks that was not previously agreed upon? What about late payments and those clients who don’t pay their invoice on time?
Do you know how you will handle these situations when they happen? Or will you be the goodie goodie who lets things slide because you’re afraid your client will leave and end the service which then would end the payments? Have you thought about your mental health when it comes to doing your job?
These things are important to know. Yes, you want a client but how will things go once the client shows up? What are your standards? What are your non-negotiables? How do you handle stress and conflict? Because anything can happen and unexpected things will creep up on you while you’re working.
Will you be able to keep your faith and hold tight? Or will you feel the need to walk away and give up on being a virtual assistant? What will you do? I recommend taking some time to write down your standards and your boundaries as a virtual assistant. This will help you know more on how you plan on working in your business with the client. You want the client relationship to be as positive as it can be but you also want to make room for yourself so that you’re not overworked and emotionally thrown off.
The client will come but preparation is key. Prepare yourself first before you go out seeking a client or multiple clients. A strong foundation is better than a weak one.
