MEDIA, CONTENT, STRATEGY: Are my dreams for the digital space valid?
I’ve been told “dream big, God can fund it”, “Your dreams are valid, always remember 1st Timothy 4:12″
There are times I’ve felt like a fraud, treading a path that ‘isn’t for me’, but then again, I tell myself, “heads up, Blessed, who gets to tell your story? Whose decisions decides your outcomes?”
Well, I’m here now telling MY story, so, join me as I take you on a journey to where it all began from
I was a 300 level student who was ‘told’ to remain indoors, so as not to make ‘dispensing protective measures’ difficult for the government — yes, this was the period of the deadly Corona virus disease in 2020.
I was a young girl who although, didn’t know what the future held, but was so certain about what she didn’t want for herself, and that was ‘to become a Biology teacher (or as my parents loved saying it “university lecturer”) after her 4 years in the university’. I wanted something different, something expressive, and then the lockdown happened, “ooh my, am I in luck here?”.
The lockdown opened me to a world of creativity, innovation and critical thinking. I became so interested in proffering solutions to problems in the Digital space, taking online courses to learn necessary skills, writing everyday in my notebook, unlearning several thought patterns (trust me, this was on the top list of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life😂).
Taking the digital and media path from 2020 to early this year, 2023, combining it with school (yeah, this girl must graduate, right? That’s the ‘language’ my parents understand), spending my little resources on improving my skills, and in the process, staying away from certain pleasures, wasn’t a ride in the park, but it has been worth it.
So, here I was, on a certain day in March, just checking some Whatsapp status updates, and I got to a friend’s post, a ‘digital skills scholarship’, it said, ooh yes, I was so interested in it, and I took some necessary steps, and those steps led me to the YOULEAD International Skills Konnect Bootcamp.
Well, you can join me to say, yes, I was in luck here. March 25th, 2023, I got a mail stating that I had been offered a fully funded scholarship into the Digital Marketing class — yes, I screamed!
Taking my classes twice in a week for 8 good weeks, isn’t a “rose garden affair”, it’s got thorns, but I’m here for it all.
At the onboarding session, during the first week of our classes, my tutor said, “give yourself no permission for excuses”, and we had to create a learning tracker, setting milestones, timelines and deadlines for assignments and projects. Doing this served as a motivation for finishing this bootcamp I had started.
When you’re in my part of the world, you’ll know what struggles come with self learning, and the upmost one being “our dear ol’ PHCN”, or should I say ‘NEPA’ now?
Dealing with power irregularities has been a ‘thorn piercing through my skin, causing infuriating pain’, getting to submit assignments late, missing an important meeting one time, but the pros here outweighs the cons, learning Digital Marketing is fascinating.
Moving forward, the big dream is to become a Branding and Communications expert, providing solutions to brands’ challenges.
It seems vague and unknown at the moment, but I know my dreams are valid.
And like I said at the beginning, I tell my story, and I determine my outcomes. The Digital and Media space has got a gem in its world
Follow this space, there’s more stories to come, because this Digital Marketer isn’t packing her bags anytime soon!
