The ‘Why’ You Want Followers has To Come First
We are told that having a lot of followers means we are someone special. That as soon as we have the following the rest will solve itself. I started an Instagram account for a doctor and in the first two weeks we have seen a growth I didn’t expect.
It has been good enough for me to actually play with the thought of us getting to 1K followers within at least the next couple of months (realistically).
Expectations and goals
When the doctor understood that the Instagram account is doing surprisingly well she directly said “when will I get my thousands of followers?”.
She was joking of course but it raised an important question. Why would she want thousands of followers? She is a doctor who is just a few years away from retirement.
Her goal is to reach women with her information and to make a difference. You don’t actually need thousands of followers for that.
For me as the business and marketing manager who is helping her, to answer this question is more important. The reason you want followers has to do with money most of the time.
So while it is her information and her mission, the actual benefits of all the followers is more linked to my business goals. It will make it possible for us to create better products for these women and to invest more in what we are doing.
So before you dream about having a big following, think about your WHY. How will it actually benefit you and will it actually help your mission?
