I’ve touched on basic, introductory quick wins for SEO before, but truly effective SEO is a long-term strategy that requires continuous effort to achieve and maintain high rankings. It involves various techniques, such as keyword research, on-page optimization, technical SEO, and link building, to name a few. The goal is to make your website or content more relevant and useful for both search engines and users.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is one of the most important aspects of SEO.

It involves identifying the words and phrases that people use to search for products, services, or information related to a business or organization. By understanding what keywords people are using, a business can create content that is optimized for those keywords, increasing its chances of appearing in the SERP.

For example, if a business sells handmade soaps, it’s important to target keywords such as “handmade soap” or “organic soap” in their website and blog content, product descriptions, and meta tags to improve their chances of ranking well in the SERP when people are searching for those keywords.

To do this, you can use free keyword research tools, such as Moz Keyword Explorer (a good all-rounder), Google Keyword Planner (great for paid keywords, especially Google Ads), or SEMrush (a little more advanced than the other two).

On-Page Optimisation

On-page optimisation is another crucial aspect of SEO. It involves making changes to a website or digital content to make it more search-engine friendly. This includes optimizing page titles, meta descriptions, headings, and images, as well as ensuring that the website is mobile-friendly and has a fast-loading speed.

The page title and meta description should make your target audience want to click through.

Optimizing page titles and meta descriptions is especially important, as these are the snippets of text that appear on the search engine results page and give users an idea of what the page is about. They should be clear, concise, and include relevant keywords.

Technical SEO

It’s usually the realm of your web developer — while parts are fairly easy to fix, your garden variety marketing manager won’t necessarily have the backend skills to undertake structural changes alone.

Common technical issues include broken links, duplicate content, and a lack of sitemap or robots.txt file. These can be identified and fixed by performing a website audit using a tool like Ubersuggest or Screaming Frog and implementing best practices for technical SEO.

Link Building

Link building is another important aspect of SEO. It involves getting other websites to link back to a business’s website. This helps search engines understand that other websites consider the business’s website to be valuable and relevant, which in turn can help to improve its rankings.

Backlinks, also known as incoming links or inbound links, help to establish the authority and credibility of a website. However, it’s important to focus on building high-quality backlinks from reputable websites, rather than a high quantity of low-quality links, to avoid penalties from search engines.

This might sound tricky — and in some areas, it is — but you can do this by simply reaching out to other relevant and well-trusted websites. Ask if you can guest blog on their site and include backlinks to your site. They’ll typically expect the same in return, so you’ll get a nice free piece of content too! If you work with other companies, ask if they’ll link to your site and give them a high-res. PNG of your logo to use if they have a section on their website for companies they work with.

SEO is a constantly evolving field, as search engines regularly update their algorithms to provide better results for users. This means that businesses must stay up-to-date with the latest trends and algorithms to ensure that their website is optimized for search engines. This includes monitoring their website’s analytics to understand how it is performing in the SERP, and adjusting their strategy accordingly.
