I Was Laid Off 12 Months Ago. It Pushed Me to Build the Marketing Agency I’d Been Dreaming About

from Vanguards Newspaper

Twelve months ago, I got the email that changed everything. My HR asked me to hop on a “quick call” with my team lead.

A part of me already knew what was coming. The agency had been laying people off due to financial struggles. I figured it was just a matter of time before it was my turn.

That time had come.

When I joined the call, it was exactly as I had predicted:

“We’re going to have to let you go.”

The HR (who was a good friend, by the way) tried to soften the message as much as she could, but I knew it wasn’t her fault.

I wasn’t shocked. I was oddly grateful.

I had gotten a chance to work on real projects, see how things truly operated behind the scenes, and most importantly, realize that I wanted more.

But even before that call, something in me had been stirring.

I Was Tired of Watching Marketing Miss the Mark

As a content marketer and strategist, I had always believed marketing could — and should — do more.

But in most of the campaigns I worked on, the focus was rarely on results. It was on reach. Impressions. Engagement. Metrics that look good on reports but don’t always move the business forward.

Visibility is great. But what about conversions? What about revenue? What about results that actually keep businesses alive?

I kept asking myself:

  • What about the startups that just want sign-ups?
  • The real estate companies that need qualified leads?
  • The e-commerce brands desperate for buyers?
  • The SMEs trying to stay afloat without burning through their budget?

These businesses don’t need flashy strategies that take 6 months to show anything. They need lean, effective marketing that drives ROI fast and smart.

And frankly, so do the big brands. Most just don’t know it yet.

So When I Got Laid Off, I Knew Exactly What I Wanted to Do

I wasn’t going to apply for another agency job. That was off the table.

There’s only so much change you can make when you’re just an employee. I knew I wanted to build a different kind of agency. I wanted an agency that prioritizes outcomes over optics, and clarity over complexities.

I wanted my blogs to convert. I wanted my social media content to not only help brands build a community, but also convert them into loyal customers. I wanted my emails to be the ones subscribers look forward to.

A marketing agency that founders, CEOs, and marketing leads could trust to get results, not just reports full of engagement metrics that barely do anything for the brand.

So, I called a friend.

We’d worked together on a few side projects before. I respected his work ethic, and I knew he was one of the few people who could match my intensity and drive. What I wasn’t sure of was whether he shared my vision.

As it turns out, he did.

In fact, he had already started something of his own. Registered the business, defined the service offering, and was quietly building the foundation for a performance-focused ad and growth marketing agency.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

We sealed the partnership on that same call.

And That’s How Adgenius Hub Was Born

We started with nothing but a shared hunger and a clear mission: do marketing that actually delivers ROI.

Since then, it’s been 12 months of building, testing, learning, and growing. It’s been filled with wins that you can see in the case study section of our website.

We’ve also hit roadblocks, and refined our process more times than we can count. But each challenge made us sharper.

At first, it was a bit hard to convince clients of our system. We sent tons of pitches and didn’t get positive response for many.

But we knew if we gave in then, we’d lose the edge that got us started in the first place. So, we continued working with the few clients we had to stack evidence of our process.

Then the referrals started coming in. Our clients were recommending us to other brands.

One of the biggest was working with a Y Combinator–backed brand in under six months of our official launch. No cold emails. No chasing. They simply saw what we stood for and believed in our approach. After a few strategy calls, they paid us a 7-figure fee to help them drive signups and awareness.

I’d have given you our secret, but there’s none.

We just keep things stupidly simple.

No complex funnels or shiny distractions. Just a clear strategy, fast testing, and smart iteration. That’s what we laid out in detail in our disruption story, where we also shared why we do things differently from most digital marketing agencies today.

The Agency Is Growing. Now We’re Fueling It Properly.

For the past year, client work took center stage.

Now, it’s time to put a little bit of effort into our own brand. We want to build our content engine, amplify our message, and attract more of the brands we’re meant to serve.

I lead the content and strategy section of the agency, Adgenius Hub. And this next phase is personal to me.

In the coming months, I’ll be sharing our journey — the wins, the mistakes, the tough lessons. Not just as an agency founder, but as a writer and strategist committed to doing marketing differently.

There’s a lot we still want to achieve. And we will.

But for now, let’s raise a glass to growth and doing work that matters. 🥂
