A Reflection on My Digital Marketing Journey

It’s 2022, and digital marketing is being talked about by everyone at this time. Just like other fields, digital marketing has its challenge. Although digital marketing is not everything, it’s really important to understand. Not only for becoming successful in sales but also for growing a sustainable business.

Learning about digital marketing for the first time is something that cool and amazing, there are so many platforms that we can use to learn. When we move further, fast forward, the question is, “Is it still as cool and exciting as the first time?.”

Maybe yes for some people, maybe no for another one. For me, “Learning something new is easy because our glass is empty, but learning something that we think we know is different, it takes commitment, hard work, and also, a lot of time.”

And, suddenly I realize, that digital marketing is marketing. Before we talk about ads or influencers, is about marketing. It’s about crafting a message and how this message could be spread and accepted by everyone we want to target, and don’t forget the important part: making a good relationship.

I am trying to take a look at my glass and realize what am missing.

I think I completely know about it. The answer is no. Digital marketing is complicated and always develops minute by minute. Until this time, I am still learning about it, not only about digital marketing but also marketing and business itself.

Learn, unlearn, relearn, something that for me is easy to say and hard to do at the same time. To not only know about what and how, but also why. Here are some of my highlights and lessons in digital marketing so far, especially on social media.

1. It’s Not Only Media

There’s a reason why it’s called social media. SOCIAL. We have to be socialized. With our followers and potential followers, with similar and related accounts. Of course, media is really important. But we should be social, just like a human. It means we have to know when to speak, talk, respond, and also, listen.

2. It’s Not Only About Us

It’s also about them. Some of us maybe have the best products, the best content, or the best offer. But, most of our audience doesn’t care about it. They just care about themselves. So, content must help others, to make their life better. Make content that solves the problem, interactive, engaging, and authentic.

3. Never Think “It’s Just A Content”

It’s not just content. It’s complicated. It’s also about making strategies, planning, editing, and maintaining. Many skills are included in this process, from editing, photographing, crisis managing, critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical thinking, and many more.

4. It’s Not Only About Number

There is something bigger behind the number. There are humans behind the number of followers. There is a hearth that touched behind the number of like. There is money behind the number of ROAS. It’s always bigger and more awesome than we think. Don’t only focus to increase the quantity but also on maintaining and increasing quality, spare some time to make interactions.

5. Strategy > Tactic

Knowing our goal is one of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned. What are we doing right now? Branding?. Marketing?. Selling?. Try to use the right KPI for the right activity. Get to know about our competitor. Not to copy, but to think, another way that never tried before. Remember that tactic helps, but without a strategy, it’s nothing.

Last but not least, always iterate and innovate progress.
